Finding the Genius of our Creator in Nature and Scripture

God’s Covenant with David

God’s covenant with David, Israel’s second king, is stated in 2 Samuel 7:8-16.  The covenant begins with the promise of a secure home for Israel’s near term future.  History confirms that David did secure Israel’s borders during his reign, and his son Solomon ruled over a peaceful and prosperous nation for about 40 years.

“Now then, tell my servant David, ‘This is what the LORD Almighty says: I took you from the pasture, from tending the flock, and appointed you ruler over my people Israel.  I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you.  Now I will make your name great, like the names of the greatest men on earth.  And I will provide a place for my people Israel and will plant them so that they can have a home of their own and no longer be disturbed.  Wicked people will not oppress them anymore,”

2 Samuel 7:8-10 NIV

But most of the covenant applies to a more distant future time, when all God’s people would be secure in the Promised Land.  God would establish the kingdom of heaven forever, and no wickedness would oppress them ever again.

And I will give you rest from all your enemies.  ‘Furthermore, the LORD declares that he will make a house for you-a dynasty of kings!  For when you die and are buried with your ancestors, I will raise up one of your descendants, your own offspring, and I will make his kingdom strong.  He is the one who will build a house – a temple – for my name.  And I will secure his royal throne forever.

2 Samuel 7:11-13 NLT

The promises in this passage point directly toward the Messiah, the “seed of the woman” promised in Genesis.  God promised that David’s lineage would last forever and that his kingdom would never pass away.  Obviously, David’s earthly kingdom didn’t continue permanently, but there would come a time when someone from the line of David would again sit on the throne and rule as king.

Luke tells us this future king is Jesus, whose kingdom God will establish forever.

He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.

Luke 1:32-33 NIV

Jesus, the Messiah, will provide a safe place for his people, where Satan and his demons will never again oppress them.  He will provide rest from our enemies, build a house for his Father, and establish the kingdom of God forever.

Facets of Redemption found in the Covenant with David:

  • The Messiah would be a descendant of King David
  • The Messiah would provide a secure home for his people, and establish God’s kingdom forever.
  • In the Messiah’s new kingdom, evil will no longer exist.
