There’s a lot packed into the picture of God speaking the world into existence. This metaphor symbolizes at least three profound concepts that were essential at creation: information, foresight, and wisdom.

1. Speech communicates information:
Scientists now know that information is built into the laws of nature and the structure of matter. For example, the information that manages electron orbitals makes atoms possible. And the information that God embedded in DNA is one of the foundations for life. As God spoke everything into existence, he was communicating the information that was needed to make the world work. Nothing complex just falls together by accident. The picture of God speaking creation into existence illustrates the idea that information is necessary to permit everything to work together.
2. God speaks with foresight:
From the very beginning, God had to design subatomic particles with the entire periodic table in mind. God had to know in advance how he would want to use each element. He foresaw the unique properties of water molecules, of oxygen, of every element necessary for life, and designed their component parts accordingly.
God knew how all the forces of nature would need to interact, and he fine-tuned their designs to make the universe stable, predictable, reliable, and ultimately to make life possible.
3. God speaks with wisdom:
The Bible tells us that it was by Wisdom that God created the heavens and the earth.
By wisdom the LORD laid the earth’s foundations, by understanding he set the heavens in place.
Proverbs 3:19
But God made the earth by his power; he founded the world by his wisdom and stretched out the heavens by his understanding.
Jeremiah 10:12 (repeated in 51:15)
O Lord, how manifold are your works! In wisdom you have made them all.
Psalm 104:24
Proverbs 8 is a metaphorical account of creation, and wisdom plays the primary role. With wisdom, God imagined the universe and everything in it, planned it, designed it, then acted to create it. God’s wisdom made his creation perfect.
I, wisdom, dwell together with prudence; I possess knowledge and discretion.
The LORD brought me forth as the first of his works, before his deeds of old; I was formed long ages ago, at the very beginning, when the world came to be.
I was there when he set the heavens in place, when he marked out the horizon on the face of the deep, when he established the clouds above and fixed securely the fountains of the deep, when he gave the sea its boundary so the waters would not overstep his command, and when he marked out the foundations of the earth.
Then I was constantly at his side. I was filled with delight day after day, rejoicing always in his presence, rejoicing in his whole world and delighting in mankind.
Proverbs 8:12, 22, 23, 27-31
